Between July 2023 and February 2024, the Meraki espresso machine progressed through four engineering builds. The work moved from establishing a functioning prototype to refining its mechanisms, integrating features and preparing the design for manufacturing. Each build addressed a different stage of development before the later tooling and design verification milestones.
This is a retrospective on that development period. The dates below refer to the engineering milestones, rather than the release dates of current Meraki models.

July 2023: Establishing the First Working Prototype
The first engineering build brought the conceptual design into a physical machine. At this stage, the priority was to establish how the core components worked together, rather than to present a finished consumer product.
For an espresso machine with integrated grinding, brewing and steaming, a working prototype provides a way to examine interactions that drawings alone cannot resolve. Component placement, access and the sequence of operation all need to be considered as a complete system.
The July build gave the team a physical starting point for experimentation and revision. It established the foundation for the subsequent prototypes.

October 2023: Refining the Internal Mechanisms
The second build used observations from the first phase to refine the prototype. The focus moved toward the machine’s internal mechanisms, with reliability and efficiency guiding the next round of adjustments.
This phase was about making an existing design work more consistently as an assembly. A change to one component can affect its connections, surrounding space and service access, so revisions need to be assessed in the context of the whole machine.
The October milestone continued the transition from a proof of concept toward a more developed engineering design.

December 2023: Bringing the Design Together
The third build concentrated on detail refinement and feature integration. By this point, development involved bringing individual decisions together into a coherent product, including how the machine would be used.
The broader thinking behind that arrangement is described in Meraki’s account of its grinding, brewing and steaming layout. The design treats these tasks as parts of the same coffee-making sequence.
December’s work helped shape the product ahead of the final engineering build in this timeline.

February 2024: Preparing for Manufacturing
The fourth build focused on production preparation, including durability and reliability work. The aim was to move beyond a prototype that could demonstrate the concept and toward a design suitable for the next manufacturing stages.
Production preparation is a milestone, rather than a statement that every later manufacturing check is complete. Tooling, verification builds and production controls each serve their own purpose.

What Followed the Four Engineering Builds?
The development record continues with production tooling in April 2024, followed by the first design verification build in June 2024. Together, these updates show the progression from engineering prototypes toward a repeatable manufacturing process.
For current specifications and available versions, the Meraki espresso machine provides the relevant information. Historical prototype milestones should be read separately from the features of a machine available today.
