The steam wand is the part of an espresso machine most people clean least and taste most. Milk leaves protein and fat behind on the wand and inside its tip, and once that residue bakes on, it affects the next drink: weaker steam, a stale smell, and milk that textures poorly. Why milk residue is the problem

Steamed milk leaves two kinds of residue. On the outside of the wand, dried milk forms a crust that is hard to remove later.   2. Steam the milk as usual, keeping the tip below the surface after the initial stretch.
  3. Stop the steam while the tip is still in the pitcher, then lift the wand out. This simple habit prevents milk from being sucked back into the tip.
  4. Purge again briefly to blow any milk out of the tip holes.

The weekly deep clean

Once a week — or sooner if you steam several drinks a day — do a deeper clean of the tip and wand:

  • Remove the tip only if your manual allows it, and only with the machine off and cool. Some tips unscrew for soaking; others are fixed and must be cleaned in place.
  • Soak a removable tip in hot water or a milk-cleaning solution your manufacturer approves, following the recommended time. Rinse thoroughly and dry before reattaching.
  • For fixed tips, wipe the outside with a damp cloth and purge steam through the wand to clear the holes; do not push anything into the holes.

What not to do
