Level contact

Once the coffee is fully compressed, chasing extreme force is less useful than repeating a level technique. Calibrated or self-leveling tampers can reduce variation, but they do not replace distribution or correct grind adjustment.

It cannot correct clumps, cracks or uneven density inside the puck. It also occupies space in the basket. If the dose already leaves very little headroom, adding a screen may press the puck too close to the shower screen and change the flow.

6. Espresso Measuring Cup: Better Handling, Not a Substitute for Weight

An espresso measuring cup gives the shot a dedicated place to land. Compared with brewing directly into a narrow drinking glass, it can be easier to center beneath the portafilter and easier to pour into another vessel.
