The group gasket is the rubber ring inside the group head that seals against the top of the portafilter when you lock it in. It is a small part with an outsized job: it holds nine bars of pressure in the brew chamber, keeps water from spraying around the basket, and gives the portafilter that firm, slightly resistant lock you feel on a healthy machine. Like any rubber part that meets hot water daily, it wears out — and replacing it is one of the most useful maintenance skills a home espresso owner can learn.

Signs the gasket is failing
Four symptoms point to the group gasket before anything else. The most common is water leaking around the edge of the portafilter during a shot — not the stream into the cup, but drips or spray escaping between the portafilter and the group. The second is a portafilter that locks too loosely: it turns past its usual stopping point or wobbles when locked, which means the gasket no longer provides enough compression. The third is the opposite — a portafilter that is suddenly hard to turn or stuck, which can happen when a gasket swells. The fourth is unknown history: if you cannot remember the gasket ever being replaced and the machine sees regular use, add it to your next deep-clean inspection rather than assuming it is fine — replacement intervals vary too much between home and commercial use to set a universal age.

Before you start

Which gasket setup does your machine have?
Before following any removal steps, identify how your group is built, because the three common layouts require different access. With the portafilter removed, look into the group and compare what you see with the options below.
- Exposed gasket. The rubber ring is visible around the inside of the group opening, with no screen in front of it. The old gasket can usually be lifted out directly once your manual confirms the layout.
- Screw-held shower screen. A screen sits in front of the gasket and is secured by one or more visible screws. The screen must come out first, and your manual will state the screw type and torque.
- Friction-fit shower screen. The screen is held in place by tension inside the group, with no visible screws. Removal may require the tool or technique your manual specifies; do not pry it out with a lever.

The typical replacement sequence
Use your model’s manual and part diagram for every step; the sequence below is the common pattern, not a substitute for it.
- Remove the portafilter and shower screen if required. Remove the portafilter and inspect the group. On many machines, a shower screen held by a screw sits in front of the gasket; your manual will say whether it needs to come out for gasket access. Keep the parts in order and note which way the screen faces.
- Lift out the old gasket. Work it out gently with your fingers or the removal tool your manual specifies — never a metal lever or screwdriver. Do not scrape the group’s metal surfaces; scratches give water and coffee a place to collect.
- Clean the recess. Wipe the groove where the gasket sat and remove old coffee residue with a damp cloth. The new gasket needs a clean, dry surface to seat properly.
- Seat the new gasket. Press it evenly into the groove. Some gaskets have a tapered profile and only seat correctly one way; the old gasket can be deformed or was possibly installed incorrectly, so confirm orientation from the manual or part diagram rather than copying the old part blindly.
- Reassemble and test. Replace the shower screen if you removed it, lock in the portafilter with an empty basket, and confirm the lock feels firm without needing force. First run water through the group to confirm correct assembly. Then follow the manufacturer’s approved pressure or brewing test to check the seal under normal operating conditions — an empty-basket water run alone does not create enough pressure to confirm a seal.
Do not lubricate the gasket unless the manual tells you to. Most home espresso gaskets are designed to work dry; if lubrication is specified, use only the food-grade lubricant the manufacturer approves, because the wrong product can break down the rubber or end up in the coffee.
If the new gasket still leaks
A fresh gasket that leaks points to something other than the rubber. Check the basket first: a dented rim or a basket that no longer sits flat in the portafilter will leak against any gasket. Check the portafilter itself for a bent lug or a worn handle connection. Check that the gasket is seated fully and evenly in its groove — a gasket pinched on one side will seal unevenly. And check the group for scale or debris behind the gasket; if the groove was not cleaned before installation, the new gasket may sit proud and never seal. Making a gasket last longer
Gasket life is mostly about how the machine is treated between replacements. Do not overtighten the portafilter, because excess force squashes the gasket every shot. Follow your manufacturer’s guidance about leaving the portafilter locked while the machine is idle: some recommend removing or loosely resting it, while others see no issue. Keep the group area clean so grounds do not bake onto the seal. Follow the manufacturer’s descaling schedule for your water hardness to protect the whole water path — but do not descale more often than the schedule says, because over-descaling can itself damage parts. When you deep-clean the group, look at the gasket while it is exposed: a healthy gasket is supple and springs back; a flat, cracked, or rock-hard gasket is due for replacement even if it has not leaked yet.
