Good dual-boiler espresso machine maintenance is mostly preventive: remove fresh coffee and milk residue before it hardens, keep moisture away from the grinder, use water that meets the machine's requirements, and let the machine's cleaning program control internal cycles.
A dual-boiler design supports brewing and steaming at the same time, but it also has separate brew and steam water paths. That makes model-specific instructions more important—not a reason to use stronger chemicals or clean twice as often. If you own Meraki, open the Meraki Espresso Machine page and use the Product Manual in “Full specifications & downloads” as the source of truth.

A safe maintenance rhythm
- After brewing: discard the puck, rinse the basket and portafilter, and wipe loose grounds from the group area.
- After steaming milk: wipe the wand immediately with a clean damp cloth and use the machine's normal purge action.
- As needed: empty and rinse the drip tray, refresh the reservoir, and wipe the brew-scale area without flooding it.
- When the manual or machine directs: use the blind basket and on-screen Cleaning Mode with the approved cleaning product.
- Before changing water treatment or descaling: check the manual or contact Meraki Support with your water-hardness information.
Why dual-boiler maintenance needs model-specific instructions
In a dual-boiler machine, one boiler is managed for brewing and another for steam. The water temperature, fill logic, valves, and cleaning path are designed as a system. A generic internet procedure that tells you to run a solution through the group and steam wand may not follow the route intended by your machine.
Meraki combines dual boilers with a commercial rotary pump, a heated group, an integrated grinder, and two built-in scales. Routine care should protect all of those systems without turning normal cleaning into an internal repair. Use the touchscreen Cleaning Mode for the procedures it controls, and keep manual cleaning focused on removable or accessible surfaces. Our espresso machine lifespan guide explains how water quality, wear parts, service access, and maintenance history affect long-term ownership.

What to clean after brewing and steaming
For a broader daily and monthly routine covering the group head, steam wand, grinder, drip tray, and water system, use the espresso machine cleaning checklist.
Portafilter, basket, and group area
Knock out the puck while it is still easy to remove. Rinse the basket and portafilter with clean water, then wipe coffee particles from the group gasket and visible shower-screen area with a suitable brush. The Meraki Barista Cleaning Brush is designed for this accessible group area.
Do not automatically remove the shower screen with a screwdriver. If the current manual provides a removal procedure, follow it exactly. Otherwise, clean the visible surface and use the machine's internal cleaning program.
Steam wand
Milk residue is easiest to remove immediately. Wipe the outside of the wand after every milk drink and briefly purge it using the normal operating control. If flow becomes uneven or residue remains around the tip, use only the deep-clean procedure specified for your model. Do not leave the wand soaking unattended or force a tool into the steam holes.
Drip tray and built-in brew scale
Empty the tray before it overfills and rinse removable parts. Wipe the scale platform with a soft damp cloth, but do not pour water onto the scale or press down on it during cleaning. The practical benefit of Meraki's brew-by-weight system depends on keeping the weighing surface free of dried coffee and debris.

How to use a blind basket safely
A blind basket has no outlet holes. In a compatible machine it is used during a backflush cycle to direct water through the intended cleaning path. Because that cycle pressurizes the group, the machine's own procedure matters.
- Confirm that you have the correct blind basket and the cleaning product named in the current manual.
- Install the basket and portafilter as directed.
- Open Meraki's on-screen Cleaning Mode and follow every prompt rather than manually timing repeated brew cycles.
- When the program finishes, remove and rinse the portafilter and basket as instructed.
- If the cycle stops, leaks, or shows an error, do not improvise; stop and contact Support.
A water-only rinse and a detergent cleaning are not interchangeable. Do not add detergent every time you rinse, and do not assume another espresso machine's timing applies to Meraki.
| Area | Safe owner action | Follow the manual or Support for | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group and portafilter | Rinse removable parts and brush visible grounds | Cleaning Mode, detergent, screen removal | Forcing tools into valves or seals |
| Steam wand | Wipe and purge after milk use | Tip removal or deep-clean procedure | Unattended soaking or blocked-hole probing |
| Water system | Use fresh water that meets requirements | Filter choice, hardness target, descaling | Guessing with vinegar or unapproved acid |
| Integrated grinder | Use a dry brush on accessible removable parts as directed | Burr removal, calibration, unusual noise | Water or a damp cloth in the burr chamber |
| Scales and touchscreen | Wipe gently with a soft cloth | Calibration or error messages | Flooding, solvents, or heavy pressure |
Water quality and descaling: do not use a universal calendar
Scale risk depends on mineral content, alkalinity, treatment method, water consumption, and steam use. “Every two months” and “once a year” can both be wrong for a particular home. Filtered water is not automatically low-scale water, and very low-mineral water is not automatically appropriate for every boiler.
Instead of using a generic calendar:
- obtain a water report or test the water you actually put into the reservoir;
- compare those results with the current Product Manual;
- use the filter or treatment method approved for the machine;
- follow on-screen prompts and model-specific instructions; and
- contact Meraki Support before descaling if the water history is unknown.
Keep the integrated grinder dry
Coffee particles and oils collect in every grinder, but moisture can cause clumping and corrosion. Follow the Product Manual before removing the hopper or any burr component. For owner-accessible areas, use a dry brush and keep water away from the burr chamber and grind chute.
Do not use a grinder-cleaning product unless it is approved for the machine. If the grinder makes a new mechanical sound, stalls, or shows a persistent error, stop using it and contact Support rather than forcing the adjustment mechanism.

When to stop cleaning and ask for service
Cleaning is not a substitute for diagnosis. Stop the machine and contact Meraki Support if you notice a persistent leak, electrical smell, repeated error message, damaged power cord, sudden pressure or temperature change, grinder stall, or steam performance that does not recover after the approved cleaning procedure.
Also ask for guidance before opening the case, replacing a gasket, changing calibration, or working on internal plumbing. Keeping the service boundary clear protects both the machine and the person maintaining it.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I backflush a Meraki espresso machine?
Use the interval and procedure in the current Product Manual or on-screen Cleaning Mode. Usage and coffee oil buildup vary, so this guide does not replace the machine's schedule. Use detergent only when the approved procedure calls for it.
Can I descale Meraki on a fixed two- or three-month schedule?
Do not assume a universal interval. Test the actual water, review the manual, and follow the machine or Support guidance. Water hardness and usage can change the appropriate timing substantially.
Can I remove the shower screen myself?
Only if the current manual gives an owner procedure for your exact model and generation. Otherwise, brush the visible group area and use Cleaning Mode.
How should I clean the built-in scales?
Remove loose grounds and wipe the accessible platform gently with a soft, lightly damp cloth. Do not flood it, use solvent, or press heavily on the weighing surface.
Protect the machine by following the machine.
